March 2014 Update

In February, Town of Bridgewater staff released the fourth annual implementation report on the Integrated Community Sustainability Plan (ICSP).  The report provides details on the Town's sustainability activities and achievements over the previous 12 months.  The report was well received by Bridgewater Town Council.

Included in the report are the results of the sustainability feedback survey that was issued to CSN members back in January.  The survey found that CSN members encourage the Town to maintain or increase its sustainability efforts, and that the Town's efforts to date have resulted in improvements to the Town's reputation.  Combined input from CSN members and Town Council also resulted in recommendations to investigate four new project ideas starting next fiscal year:
  • Partners for Climate Protection Program
  • Renewable Energy Potential Study
  • Community Energy Retrofits
  • Fleet Management Plan
Read the report to find out more about these and other initiatives that the Town is actively pursuing!

South Shore Sustainability Expo & Forum

As an event partner, the CSN is pleased to announce that the 3rd annual South Shore Sustainability Expo & Forum will take place on Saturday April 5th 2014.

The Expo's tradeshow takes place at the NSCC campus in Bridgewater, and will showcase the best in local and regional business, community and civic practices for sustainability. It is a great showcase opportunity for exhibitors and vendors to network and build awareness of their products and services.

The Forum, organized by the CSN's Events & Engagement team, takes place later that day at the Osprey Ridge Golf Course. It is a free learning event for the public, and the focus this year is climate change.  Keynote speaker will be Dr. Edith Callaghan, professor at the School of Business at Acadia University.  Dr. Callaghan has been trained to deliver Al Gore's powerful "Inconvenient Truth" presentation, updated and improved with cutting edge science and emerging real life possibilities to combat and adapt to climate change.

It promises to be an exciting and educational day - we look forward to seeing you there!

Residential Direct Install Program

Efficiency Nova Scotia is launching a new program to help renters and homeowners improve their energy efficiency and lower electricity costs!  This free service helps families implement proven, effective, and simple measures to cut electricity use, including:
  • Compact Florescent Light bulbs (CFL)
  • Electric hot water tank wrap
  • LED night lights
  • Low-flow showerheads
  • Faucet aerators
They'll even send someone to your home to do the installation for you - at no cost!  Through these improvements families can save up to $180 / year on home energy bills.  In order to book an appointment for the Bridgewater area, simply call 1-888-281-0004 or (902) 420-7947.  For more information, you can also visit the ENSC website.

PowerShift Atlantic CSN Youth Bursaries Awarded

Congratulations to CSN youth members Ashton Rodenhiser and Erica Thornborrow, winners of a $75 bursary each to attend PowerShift Atlantic - a regional conference on climate change and community action at the end of the month!  The idea for this bursary was suggested at the January CSN Members' meeting, and a volunteer committee was struck to call for and review applications.  Ashton and Erica submitted excellent applications explaining how the conference will benefit them and their home communities.  They've also committed to providing to the CSN a brief presentation or write-up on what they learned at the conference.

Growing Green Festival - Call for Volunteers & Partners

This summer will be the 6th anniversary of the Growing Green Sustainability Festival. Would you like to be part of the energetic volunteer team that makes it happen?  Or would your business or organization like to play a significant role in this year's event (beyond a street fair booth)?

From its beginning as a small 4 hour fair at Shipyards Landing, the Festival grew last year to a 4 day event involving multiple venues. This included a popular street fair, a sustainability tour featuring leading edge sustainability initiatives around Lunenburg County, a lively music concert and fresh air films at King Street Court, a Close to Home dinner held in the greenhouse at Wile's Lake Farm Market, and more.

Many hands make light work, and the Festival's volunteer organizing committee is seeking new members! Volunteer time required to join the committee or one of its teams can be as little as 5-10 hours per month between now and mid-August. For more information, please contact the festival organizers at growinggreenfest@gmail.com or call 541-4390.  Note: volunteer opportunities on the event days themselves will be announced closer to the time of the event.

This year's festival will be held on August 21-23. Stay tuned for more information over the next few months!

Otesha Youth Project Cycling Through Bridgewater, Summer 2014!

This two month velo-odyssey will be travelling through rural and urban communities in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, as they explore local social justice and sustainability initiatives and bringing their own funky brand of eco-education to schools with The Otesha Project's play, Cycling Through Change, and the Action Addict workshop. Youth from across the country are invited to join this exciting cycling tour, and host communities are invited to support them along the way.  The tour's itinerary indicates that it will pass through Bridgewater around mid-June.  More information about joining the tour, and its itinerary, can be found on the Otesha website.

Best wishes!
