Delegates to UN and other conferences have been worrying about “the looming water crisis” since at least the 1980s, and yet it hasn’t loomed. Or has it? Cutting through the hype and the rhetoric -- what is the real state of the world’s water? Marq de Villiers' book, Back to the Well, argues that, in order to approach solutions to the problems water is facing we need, first of all, to re-frame the debate from considering water as a single global crisis to thinking of the issue as a series of local regional and river basin problems. Instead of thinking globally and acting locally, we need to think AND act locally. That makes water problems easier to solve, not harder.

Marq de Villiers and his wife, the writer Sheila Hirtle live in Port Medway, Nova Scotia. They often collaborate on books. In 2010, he was made a Member of the Order of Canada. In 2011 his book, Our Way Out was published, dealing with the problems surrounding climate change, and possible solutions.

The Mahone Bay Centre welcomes you to come and hear him speak about water in our communities. This is a free event and there is no pre-registration required. For more information please call the Mahone Bay Centre (902) 624-0890.
